I’ve only just come across this thread, and I realise that it dates from last autumn. However…
I have come to Typst in the last 6 months as a non-programmer with a background in the humanities, including Linguistics. I am long retired but very have an active interest in writing and text layout. I am regarded by friends and family as being pretty much computer (Apple particularly) literate. In that sense I am very much the sort of beginner that @Bryn is talking about and echo what he has contributed to this thread.
I have been through the Tutorial and Reference many times, and have the documentation open in another tab as I am working, but so often my reaction to the examples given is “This doesn’t help me with what I’m trying to do”. As Bryn said above, documentation is written by people who are familiar with the ins-and-outs of the program/app they are documenting, which is necessary and right. However, the resulting documents often seem less than transparent to the new user learning from scratch.
To my own embarrassment, I have found myself having to ask very elementary questions on the forum because I haven’t been able to relate what I read in the tutorials or the Reference section to what I am trying to do.
I will review the questions I have had to ask and the many I will probably continue to ask. If the community wish to address the concerns of beginners like me, I am willing to share examples.
