There are a couple of kinds of space available, they are listed here: General Symbols – Typst Documentation
As the page says:
For example,
#sym.arrow
produces the → symbol. Within formulas, these symbols can be used without the#sym.
prefix.
That means you could e.g. write
$ a quad b $
