When I paste my prewritten text into the program, it doesn’t recognize things that are italicized. I get that to make things italicized, you need to border them in brackets but it doesn’t automatically do that for things already italicized. My text is much too long to go in and do things manually. How can I get it so the text I past stays italicized?

Could you tell us what the program is? Are you using the webapp? In any case, I don’t think either tinymist or the webapp support rich text.
My recommendation is to select your text in italics only, and paste it separately, so you only need to add _ once.
If your text contains non-contiguous italics, then you can maybe use a text show rule for specific words?
As it is, without knowing what your text looks like, it’s difficult to help!
