New user limits are annoyingly restrictive

Hello!

I was making my first question post yesterday, and bumped into some annoying limits.

First, new users seem to be restricted to one embed per post, so I couldn’t embed all three of my sample screenshots, and had to link the other two. I’d argue that new users on this forum are expected to embed more than on an average Discourse.

Second, when writing a response to someone’s reply on that post, I hit another limit, that new users cannot have more than one link in a post. Which was not even fair since I only put one link in my writing, whereas the two other links came from direct quotes from the reply that I was responding to, automatically copied by Discourse. I had to manually go and clean them up.

I understand these limits help to combat spam, but perhaps they could be bumped up a little?

Hello and welcome @YaLTeR,
you should be able to do more than that once you’ve reached trust level 1. Although the limits are annoying at a first glance, I believe they are necessary to prevent spam.

For your particular case, I think it would be possible to merge all three screenshots into a single image? You can do that using Paint if you are using Windows, or any other editing software.

I believe if you use the “reply” functionality, there should be no automatic quoting. Did you perhaps click on “quote”? I agree with your sentiment about the number of links restriction being unfair, as you did not use more than 1 link.

You can easily reach TL1 by:

Get to trust level 1 by…

  • Entering at least 5 topics
  • Reading at least 30 posts
  • Spend a total of 10 minutes reading posts

I have checked and agree that two images and two links per post should be allowed for trust level zero. However, I did not find the setting to change this behavior. For the moment, you can ping @moderators so we embed your images, as I did with your post right now.

The discourse post suggests that “Admins can change these limitations by searching for newuser and first_day in site settings.”

Alright, I raised the image limit!

Cheers!

Not really; they were showing output of different versions of the code, it would be confusing if they were all merged.

Yeah, of course. I was intentionally quoting parts of the reply to answer them.

Thanks.
